Alice awoke to the feeling of her dog’s warm body pressing closely to the side of her face. She laid there for a moment, her head resting on the smooth coat of his upper back, just listening, feeling the slow rise and fall of his chest. She peered into the darkness. As the fog of slumber cleared, she noticed that it was raining outside. The water ran quietly down her plain window, and she watched it as she summoned the energy to get up and begin the day.
As she rose from her bed, her dog sprung to life. The 80 pound chocolate lab yawned dramatically and shook his head a little, as if to shake the sleep away. He looked up at her and tilted his head slightly, as if to say “Coffee?”
That’s what Alice imagined he would say, anyways.
She nodded in agreement to his presumed question and gave him a good scratch on his large, but loving haunches.
As Alice walked gingerly down the hall, she saw lightening flash against the light grey walls of her apartment, as if someone had taken a picture of her from behind. She paused for half a second, not thinking much of it, and continued on her beeline towards the coffee maker.
After inhaling deeply into the steam of her coffee, she took a moment to acknowledge how lucky she was. The storm began to rage on outside her safe haven, but she just smiled down at her pup.
“Looks like we’ll have to stay home today.”
She didn’t care. In fact, she was more than happy.
